Anatma - Doctrine No Soul
Many discourses
Concept of self at the root of attachment, which leads to suffering
2 Concepts
Personal idea of self in individuals (comes from unawareness of how things really are)
Universal Soul - philosophical soul/substance tying everything together
From Upanishadic thinkers
Atman = soul or self, entity which is unchanging
Buddhism rejects
Buddhist analysis shows 5 aggregates
Rupa (material aspect)
Vedana (feeling)
Sanna (concepts)
Sankhara (mental formations)
Vinnana (perceptions)
Each aggregate can be further broken down
Non-soul doctrine relies on foundation of the exact nature of the world
Paticcasamuppada or dependent origination
Doctrine of Kamma and Punabbhava
Punabbhava = rebirth
Kamma = main cause for Punabbhava
Not the only factor in rebirth, 5 laws total: natural, psychological, geographical, biological, and kamma
All have an effect on punabbhava
