Darstanitika = masters of similes
- used poetry and similes to teach meditation and dhamma
Lead by Kumaralata
- Named for his "Array of Similes"
Odd mix of sautranitka and sarvastivada views
- kind of anti-Abhidharma
Darstantika = Arising requires causes and conditions, but ceasing does not.
Abhidharma = both require causes and conditions
Citta-Caitta = successive arising
- one dharma after another like merchants through a pass
- linear model (Sauntrantikas)
- constellation model, all at once (Sarvastavadins)
Cognition of an object
- No true self: True self view speculates on what affects the self.
- Rope = snake
- objects are non-existent
Knowledge of non-existent objects
- can't be done. All knowledge based on something seen before
- dreams/illusions are not real
Fetters are real, objects are not
- Woman enters hall
- husbands = jealous
- sons = respect
- sages = compassion
- each a different view of same object = no ultimate reality
Karma = bodily, vocal, and mental volition.
- Can be transformed (even gravest offenses)
Bija Theory
- Not annihilation or eternalism
- From the seed grows the sprout, but the sprout is not the seed = neither identical, nor different
- Preached by Kumaralata
